But nowadays it is celebrated on the first Sunday of August rather than 30 July globally. However, on 27 July 2011, the 65th Session of the United Nations General Assembly declared that 30 July is “International Day of Friendship”. And the friendship day history has been made.

Some friends greet each other with exchanges of gifts and cards on Friendship day. Friendship day hand bands are very popular in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and parts of South America. In the era of social networking sites, Friendship Day is also being celebrated online and virtually.

The idea of a World Friendship Day was first proposed by Dr Ramon Artemio Bracho on 20 July 1958 to his friend, in Paraguay.

In this meeting of friends, the World Friendship activity was born. The World Friendship Crusade is a foundation that promotes friendship and similar activities among all human beings, regardless of race, color or religion. Since then, Paraguay is celebrating 30 July as the friendship day as the celebration this beautiful relation of friendship.

The World Friendship Crusade has requested the United Nations for many years to declare 30 July as World Friendship Day and then finally on 20 May, General Assembly of the United Nations decided to proclaim 30 July as the International Day of Friendship. And invite all Member States to observe the International Day of Friendship in for the culture and customs of their local, national and regional communities.
